Whenever a nation turns to false gods and idol worship, the Lord faithfully raises up prophetic voices to call the people to repentance. Elijah was a man with a nature like ours and he prayed big prayers. God answered those prayers to call many to repentance. James 5 uses this story to remind believers of their responsibility to pray against the increasing worldliness and idolatry in our world today — that many would turn from their sin to the Lord.
